Sichuan is a large and populous province in Southwest China, roughly the size of France. It is diverse in both landscape and people, with over 90 million people living in densely populated farming areas on the fertile farmlands, and scattered over the high mountains that mark the eastern edge of the Tibetan plateau. Sichuan (also written Szechuan) is famous for its spicy food, pandas and tea-house culture. The capital city is Chengdu.

Ethnic Minorities of Sichuan

The high mountains of Sichuan are home to a large number of ethnic minority groups, including the Yi and Tibetan peoples. This area has, until recently,
been isolated from the rest of China by high mountain passes. The ethnic groups have rich cultures and languages that had developed over centuries of relative isolation.
Both the Yi and Tibetan peoples have traditionally been farmers and herders, making a livelihood by growing crops and herding animals at high altitude.

Today the areas are accessible by rail and road, bringing both new opportunities and new challenges to the people of Sichuan.
