3E Development began working in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture in October 2004.

Life in the highlands of Aba Prefecture has changed little with the coming of modernity. Although some people live in towns, working for the government or running small shops, most Aba residents are either nomads or farmers. Nomad life revolves around the yak, as families live in black yak hair tents and live largely off the produce of their own animals. In farming regions, families living in houses of rammed earth grow traditional crops of highland barley, potatoes and beans, tending smaller herds of yak for milk and butter.

3E Development is currently partnering with local governments in Ruo’ergai and Aba Counties for holistic community development.

Projects include:

  • Partnership with local communities to equip schools to provide quality education in a healthy environment.  Projects in village and county level schools include:
    • Provision of small libraries for students’ use.
    • Provision of basic educational resources (notebooks, pencils, learning aids, art and    sports supplies).
    • Education in basic health and hygiene, such as hand washing and tooth brushing.
    • Provision of resources and facilities for improved health and hygiene.
    • Training in teaching techniques for English teachers at the middle and high school levels.
  • Provision of educational sponsorships to students from poor families in a variety of Aba County communities. Sponsorship begins usually at the middle school level and continues until a student’s educational career is finished or the family’s economic conditions have improved to the point sponsorship is no longer needed.
  • Cooperation with local education professionals to produce Tibetan language education resources, including classroom aids and reading books.
  • In Ruo’ergai County, where desertification threatens large areas of the grasslands, 3E Development is working with local leaders and other agencies to replant sections of the grassland and introduce new methods of grassland maintenance to restore and protect the lands for generations to come.
  • Researching innovative use of local products to supplement family incomes.

Resources

3E Sichuan has produced a number of resources in the Tibetan language for use in primary schools. These are available for purchase to foundations and organisations working in Tibetan areas.

All posters use simple written Tibetan suitable for primary school children and are printed on hard-wearing plastic sheet.
The health posters are available in both Tibetan and Chinese language.
